Google Calendar Overview
First, go through these resources from Google. Keep in mind these sessions are aimed at using the Google Apps in business. Some tasks we do will be similar, but think about how you'd use your calendar to communicate important dates to your students for classes.
Also remember that students will not receive Gmail through their accounts, so some of the information about notifications and setting up events will not apply when working with them.
Step 1: Watch the overview video.
Step 2: Click through the different parts of this interactive "tour". Be sure to read the section on My Calendar. Most likely you'll eventually create a calendar for each class you teach.
Step 3: Watch this video on creating events. Many of your "events" will be assignments or dates for projects. Our Google Apps domain also allows you to add attachments to events. This means you can include important files from your computer or direction from your Drive account directly in the calendar.

Step 4: Watch this video on how to share your calendars. I will provide more information later on how to share with a whole class. I'll also share a way you can embed the calendar in a website where your students can find it very easily.
Step 5: Access your Google Calendars by clicking on the Google Apps icon as shown. You will need to sign in with your lakevillefalcons account if you haven't already.
Step 6: Take a few minutes to explore the tools as they were shown in the resources above. Here are some suggestions for practice:
Step 7: Let me know what questions or ideas you have for calendars. I hope we can use these a lot at the high school and middle school this year. For example, they will be very helpful for checking out labs or equipment. I will add additional tutorials to this page as I find out what you need and how you want to use them.
- Add an event. Look at options such as setting the times and notifications. Also, try adding a file and a Google Document as an attachment.
- Create a new calendar for a class you might be teaching. Change the color for this new calendar. Also practice hiding and showing the new calendar and your personal calendar.
- Look at the sharing settings for your class calendar. Think about settings you would use if you wanted your students to be able to see the information. Feel free to share the calendar with me if you want to practice that.
